"Railway heritage" is more than just an old station or an old locomotive.

The transport by rail, train, tram in the city, metro,... marked the transport revolution of the 19th century and left us with an impressive heritage. The term "railway heritage" refers to all the cultural heritage of the railways, the light railways and tramways (buildings, equipment, tools, know-how and cultural phenomena), the preservation and revaluation of which is a tribute to and contributes to a better understanding of the role that the railways played and do play - in town and country planning, economic, social, cultural,... development.
We need to look at this heritage in a holistic way: immovable, movable, documentary, intangible and even digital heritage - following the way in which the term 'heritage' was defined during the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.

The rolling stock and the most striking elements of the infrastructure attract the most public attention, much smaller elements that define the culture of the railway are overlooked.

Le transport par rail, train, tramway dans la ville, métro,... a marqué la révolution des transports du XIXe siècle et nous a laissé un héritage impressionnant. Le terme "patrimoine ferroviaire" désigne l'ensemble du patrimoine culturel des chemins de fer, les chemins de fer vicinaux et les tramways (bâtiments, équipements, outils, savoir-faire et phénomènes culturels), dont la préservation et la revalorisation rendent hommage et contribuent à une meilleure compréhension du rôle que les chemins de fer ont joué et jouent encore - sur le plan spatial, économique, social, culturel,...
Nous devons considérer ce patrimoine de manière holistique : patrimoine immobilier, mobilier, documentaire, immatériel et même numérique - en suivant la manière dont le terme "patrimoine" a été défini lors de l'Année européenne du patrimoine culturel 2018.

Le matériel roulant et les éléments les plus marquants de l'infrastructure attirent le plus l'attention du public, les éléments beaucoup plus petits qui définissent la culture du chemin de fer sont souvent négligés.

Der Transport per Bahn, Zug, Straßenbahn in der Stadt, U-Bahn,... markierte die Verkehrsrevolution des 19. Jahrhunderts und hinterließ uns ein beeindruckendes Erbe. Der Begriff "Eisenbahnerbe" bezieht sich auf das gesamte kulturelle Erbe der Eisenbahnen und Straßenbahnen (Gebäude, Ausrüstung, Werkzeuge, Know-how und kulturelle Phänomene). Dessen Erhaltung und Aufwertung gibt uns eine Würdigung und ein besseres Verständnis der Rolle, die die Eisenbahnen spielten und spielen - räumlich, wirtschaftlich, sozial, kulturell usw.).
Wir müssen dieses Erbe ganzheitlich betrachten: das unbewegliches, bewegliches, dokumentarisches, immaterielles und sogar digitales Erbe - in Anlehnung an die Art und Weise, wie der Begriff "Erbe" im Europäischen Jahr des Kulturerbes 2018 definiert wurde.

El término "patrimonio ferroviario" se refiere al conjunto del patrimonio cultural de los ferrocarriles y tranvías (edificios, equipos, herramientas, conocimientos técnicos y fenómenos culturales) cuya preservación y revalorización rinde homenaje y contribuye a una mejor comprensión del papel que los ferrocarriles desempeñaron y desempeñan - espacial, económico, social, cultural,...

Het vervoer per spoor, de trein, de tram in de stad, de metro,... markeerde de vervoersrevolutie van de 19e eeuw en liet ons een indrukwekkend erfgoed na. De term ‘spoorwegerfgoed’ verwijst naar al het culturele erfgoed van de spoor-nen tramwegen (gebouwen, uitrusting, gereedschap, knowhow en  cultuurfenomenen), waarvan het behoud en de herwaardering een eerbetoon is aan en bijdraagt tot een beter begrip van de rol die het spoor speelde en speelt - ruimtelijk, economisch, sociaal, cultureel,...
We dienen dit erfgoed op een holistische wijze te bekijken: het onroerend, roerend, documentair, immaterieel en zelfs digitaal erfgoed - dit in navolging van de wijze waarop de term ‘erfgoed’ gedefinieerd werd tijdens het Europees Jaar van het Cultureel Erfgoed 2018.

Het rollend materieel en de opvallendste elementen van de infrastructuur trekken bij het publiek de meeste aandacht, veel kleinere elementen die de cultuur van het spoor bepalen, worden over het hoofd gezien.
